18 Aug Signing of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid

This essay will be looking at the signing of Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane who is regarded as being amongst the best defenders in the world.

Manchester United has made player transfers. Manchester United is about to complete the signing of Real Madrid and France international Raphael Varane with the cost set to be around £45 million according to sources related to the transfer. According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, the transfer is to take place next week. The deal is said to be completed with Varane and he is due to have his medical as a Manchester United player within a couple of days. This deal means that the club have taken their summer spending spree to £115 million which is the highest the club has spent in a recent memory. They had already signed winger Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for £72 million several weeks earlier after missing out on him last year. Prior to Sancho they had also bought Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton on a free transfer. Evidence above shows that Varane’s transfer as well as prior signing of winger Jadon Sancho has broken the club’s transfer record for an attacker.

Varene has a brilliant football resume. Varane had spent 10 years in the Spanish giants Real Madrid where he enjoyed a trophy laden time having won two La Liga titles, four Champions League triumphs and a Copa del Rey success against Barcelona in 2014. The Frenchman has long been among the clubs most essential transfer targets. His contract had been set to expire next summer and so Manchester United was able to secure his signature below what his actual valued price is in the current market compared to 12 months previously. The transfer fee of £42 million had been agreed with £34 million paid upfront and another £8 million for add-ons with the personal terms already agreed and an announcement having been made last Tuesday evening. Manchester United released a statement stating, “Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of French international defender and World Cup winner, Raphael Varane, subject to a medical and to player terms being finalised.” Above evidence shows that Varane could potentially become a brilliant player for Manchester United and could translate the excellent form he showed with France and Real Madrid into the Premier League.

Furthermore, Varane previous club Real Madrid had also released a statement following his transfer out of the club stating, “Real Madrid wants to show all its affection to Raphael Varane and his family and wishes him good luck in this new stage of his professional career”. His former Real Madrid teammate and fellow defensive partner Sergio Ramos (recently transferred to PSG) has sent Varane a message on social media wishing him luck ahead of his move to his new club later joking “If we face each other, always with the team of your country, right”. The two centre-backs formed part of a formidable partnership together at Real Madrid which lasted for close to a decade and was considered by many experts and pundits to be amongst the best in the world. Consequently, it apparent that Varane enjoys friendly relations with his former Real Madrid teammate Sergio Ramos who he established a brilliant defensive partnership with considered to be amongst the best in the world.
