Preview of the upcoming Premier League season

17 Aug Preview of the upcoming Premier League season

This essay will be looking at the preview of the upcoming Premier League season due to start in August. It will also focus on the main teams who are amongst the favourites for the league title and different transfers.

The new upcoming Premier League season is about to start this weekend on the 14th August with the opening match between old rivals Manchester United and Leeds United. As normal Premier League clubs have spent a lot of money ahead of the upcoming Premier League season. Reigning champions Manchester City begin their season against London club Tottenham Hotspur now under new management with former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo appointed as new manager. The Manchester club bought Aston Villa and England international Jack Grealish for a British record fee of over £100million. Fellow Manchester neighbours Manchester United have had a busy transfer window following on from their 2nd place finish in the Premier League and Europe League final last season and have bought in centre-back Raphael Varane from Real Madrid for £42million and winger Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for over £70million. The club are widely expected to challenge for major honours this coming season after 2nd the previous season and are said to be disappointed if this doesn’t transpire. Consequently, the recent transfer window and performances last season shows what could potentially happen in the coming season with improvements in form for Manchester United although there are also downsides as to whether Manchester City continue to dominate the English domestic game in the coming years.

Liverpool is entering this season in calming mood after having finished 3rd last season although they did not win any trophies with there Premier League title challenge falling away midway through the season in January. They later had a revival in form towards the end of the season going on a good run of form during March and April ultimately finishing in 3rd place qualifying for the Champions League in the process. The club have signed young defender Jules Kounde from Sevilla for over £20million. They are opening league match of the season is away from home against newly promoted EFL Championship winners Norwich City and their next match after that being against Burnley at Anfield. Reigning Champions League winners Chelsea is amongst the favourites expected to do well this season among pundits, analysts and experts following their European Cup win last season. Manager Thomas Tuchel was widely expected to build on his squad with the clubs’ marquee signing being the purchase of Inter Milan and Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku expected to be over £100million. Since originally leaving the Premier League first time round in 2019 the Belgian has established himself and is widely regarded to be among the best strikers in the world with his touch and hold up play much improved from his time at Manchester United. He is also already his country’s all-time leading goal scorer at international level. The club haven’t made any high-profile signings except for Lukaku. This therefore shows the potential of Liverpool’s capability to recover back to previous seasons whereby they achieved both Premier League and Champions League glory.
In conclusion, I believe that this new season promises to bring a lot of excitement for supporters of all clubs particularly in the aftermath of the European Championships which have just taken place in this country.
