Unsigned Exposure Documentary Draft

03 Apr Unsigned Exposure Documentary Draft

Unsigned Exposure is a documentary exploring the relationship between social media and unsigned music artists. As social media has grown, artists independent from a label have moved to these platforms to gain success in their career, promoting their music, building a fanbase and creating a brand for themselves, an opportunity that has allowed them to remain independent from the control of a record label. However with the changing climate of social media, a number of modifications to the platforms algorithms, primarily Instagram and Facebook, have resulted in consistently decreasing organic reach, a bid to push users towards Instagram advertising.

The aim of this documentary is to explore the impact of these changes on users, with unsigned artists as a focal point being a group most heavily effected by the issue, offering a new perspective on social media platforms. The intended audience is any regular social media users, unsigned artists and individuals interested in underground music.

(Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, my interview with the social media expert was cancelled. Filming of some additional footage, including live performances, was also cancelled. All audio will be edited and the length of the documentary will be reduced to the required 15 minutes for the final submission. All notes for improvements that will be made for the final submission are included throughout the video, laid out in the order they will appear in.)
