The JLDN live show is a show which goes live every Friday at 4 pm. It is a journalism student live show for LSBU university, therefore our target audience is young people in London.
I was the managing editor for this live show. We had a morning meeting at 11 AM to discuss what VT packages we had and if we will have guests at the studio or we will send someone to report live. I made sure that the bulletins and social media content would be written on time, and let Juliana take a look at them as she was the news editor.
We had four VTs and a studio guest, I wanted to have a live report about the extinction rebellion because we already had a VT on it, but unfortunately there were not enough people to send out.
The news editor reviewed the VTs and chose the running order, we had opening titles and intro. I chose to start with the homeless VT because it was the first time we had a VT about homeless people which means it was a new subject. After this VT, I chose to have the bulletins because I didn’t want to have all the VTs after each other, for this reason I tried to have something between each VT. After the VT it was the extinction rebellion VT with the interview. Then we had the student finance VT, social media and, in the end, the TFL VT then the goodbye and closing titles. This running order gave the programme a smooth order and it flowed between each item.
I wanted to have two more meetings to make sure everything was going well. In the second meeting I made sure that they are on their way to finish what they were asked to do, and the third meeting is to go through the running order and make sure everything is okay before we go live. This plan worked successfully, because in the second meeting I found out that the person responsible for the camera left, so I replaced her by someone else. If I did not have the second meeting I would not be able to know that and solve the problem.
When it was time for our second meeting and I didn’t have the printed running order and the script, I decided to have the meeting on time without the printed papers because I did not want to be late and to make sure that we will have our driving through on time. I explained to the presenters and the producers why we still did not have the printed papers. The news editor and I went through the running order and I made sure that everyone will be ready at 15:30 for a run through. We solved the printing problem, we had the run through on time and the live show went live on time as well. If I will look back, I would have chosen earlier someone to do the camera and will not wait for the person responsible for the cameras to come back. I would choose someone earlier and will not wait.
The most important thing for me was that the live show went live on time, because you can’t tell people that we will be live at 15:00 and then go live at 15:30 this will let us lose our audience. We can go live even if everything was not perfect, it is a live show some mistakes will happen.
When we were live because we had someone to watch the live show on YouTube and she told us when the voice was quiet so we solved out the problem, but when you watch the live show again on YouTube you can hear that the sound levels were changing all the time. But we had problems with the sound, it was good with the sofa presenters, but it was not good with the guest because it was too low and with the VTs was too high. To solve this problem, It will be good to spend nearly one or two hours to test sound levels, all we need is spending more time looking at the sound levels and the problem will be solved.
The lighting and cameras were good, maybe we can try to fix the social media board the next time by having more lights. The background for the sofa presenters was so good, it is beautiful to see people working in the background and the plants which we had colored the studio in a good way, so that the audience will not be bored because of the framing.
As a content, the live show had good live interview, and another interview about the student loan. It covered good stories, as the homeless story. We need better shots in our VTs but the editing was good. It was the first time that we had live guest in the studio which was progress. We had two questions about the students, so we tried to link the extinction rebellion with our audience. The social media content was good because they talked about everything which was trending. and Ameera did a great job because she did not have autocue. The bulletin content was also good, but I wanted to see more energy while Charlie was presenting same for the sofa presenters.
I wanted to mention in the opening that we will have live guest in the studio to engage the audience and show them that we always try to improve our live show.
Finally, I made sure that the social media pictures and bulletins pictures were copyright free.
