Arun Matharu – VT Submission

13 Dec Arun Matharu – VT Submission

Date of broadcast: 17 October, 2019

Headline: How does LSBU support your mental health?

Studio introduction: The Guardian recently conducted studies on universities’ student well-being initiatives across the UK. They found that of the leading 21 universities, only one in four said that they had standardised intervention policies under which campus support services will contact students if they miss a defined number of lectures. Our reporter, Mahira Begum, went to the London South Bank University Student Life Centre to find out what we do to support students who may be suffering.

The VT I have chosen to be submitted was broadcast on 17 October, 2019. The group consisted of Mahira Begum (reporter), Seyi Adejori (filming), Georgina Blackwell (editor) and myself (researcher/editor). My role specifically involved the initial research that went into filming the VT. I read through the article that initially sparked the VT (The Guardian) and highlighted key quotes and points that could be used to develop an angle. I then contextualised the piece by connecting it to both World Mental Health Day and LSBU itself. As timing was an issue for the group that week, I planned specific shots that may be of use when filming (for example, GVs, VOX pops, and questions to ask interviewees) and ensured that we were all prepared to meet deadlines. I finally wrote the studio introduction for the VT.
