Critical Explication of Live News Show Week 7

I have chosen the YouTube show broadcast on the 22nd November 2019 as the subject of my critical explanation because that day I had multiple roles to take over.

I was a camera operator and helped produce one of the video packages and was an outdoor reporter on ‘Black Friday’ for the live show and went down to North London to report on Arsenal Football Club with Pedro.

I choose this show because it was a show which I showed multiple things which I was cable of. The areas which I will consider are camera operating skills and the outdoor reporting segment.

For the VT package, I was part of the group which was reporting on Vue cinema banning the movie Blue Story. I was the camera operator for this, and we went to Leicester Square where we asked young people what their opinions were of the film and if it has been unfairly criticised.

Although, the story was a brilliant idea and there were difficulties in terms of having people from different demographics as the majority of people who watched the film and we spoke to were young people and ethnic minorities.

I thought my camera operating abilities were decent at best. With a lot of things to work on like the right camera angles and making sure there aren’t empty spaces when doing the Vox pops.

Also, when being in charge of the camera I was in charge of the sound coming through the microphone and making sure it is clear. I had some difficulties in that as there was no sound coming from the hand microphone so we used the clip-on mic instead the sound was not bad when I was listening through the headphones in the camera and when my editor was editing the VT he had difficulties so he had to adjust it to make it slightly better.

We also were planning to arrange an interview following up on our VT but we found it difficult to find someone willing to talk about the subject of knife crime and the film.

In terms of the visuals shown on screen, it could do with some improvements but there were things I was pleased with aspects such as the cutaways and the piece-to-camera I thought they were really good and positioned well and were fully focused on the reporter. However, there was I wire on the corner of the frame which, unfortunately, hadn’t been noticed until the editor had seen it and there was nothing that could have been done about it.

The final edit was overall pleasing as the story was very popular and was mainly concerning our target audience.

At the start of the day, planning of the show was going well on my behalf I was assigned to go to oxford circus and interview a shopper on Black Friday and that was done as an ‘as live’. We didn’t have a proper camera and the area was really busy and loud, so we instead used one phone for the visuals and the other one for audio and we sent the piece to our producers to edit it for us.

I thought my delivery on the interview for the ‘Black Friday’ could have been a little bit smoother as I seemed a little bit nervous as I lacked preparation and I did the interview on the spot and was slightly stuttered when I was ending the interview I almost forgot how to end it.

Afterward, we went on to the Emirates stadium in North London to do a live skype report on Arsenal sacking their manager. Pedro was on camera and I held it for him. The idea of going to the emirates was a brilliant idea because it was breaking news on the day and was the most talked-about topic at the time. However, what could have been done better was the use of an actual camcorder and possibly connect it with our phone.

The main issue we had that day was that we didn’t’ know form the producers until it was very close to the show what time we were going live on skype and we couldn’t get a variety of shots as it was essentially a video call we just had one frame outside the stadium with the club crest behind Pedro.

I think the planning on what that end could’ve been better from the production team. I would also say that we would of like to have gone to the Emirates Stadium sooner because there were a lot of fans around the stadium then than when we could have spoken to someone who is an expert on the club. But the managing editor and producer decided to go on different orders.

I thought the VT’s shown on the show were all really good and the show was also good when watching it back as I didn’t get to witness the production, but the shows were very aesthetically pleasing. One VT I thoroughly enjoyed was Juliana’s VT because along with my groups VT it was the one, I thought most relevant to our audience and w could engage towards.

In conclusion, I believe that particular show was a success on my behalf and overall because I was heavily involved although the planning of the ideas was perfect, I wish we could improve on the executions of them. Mainly because we had to practice and figure it out along the way.
