Southwark Council Not Giving Schools Promised Knife Crime support.

07 Nov Southwark Council Not Giving Schools Promised Knife Crime support.

Townsend Primary school within Southwark.

Townsend Primary School disagree with Southwark Council as they believe not enough is being done to create awareness surrounding knife crime. According to The Sun, “In 2018, it was a seven year high for the number of stabbings within London, reaching 1,299”.

Barrie Hargrove, Deputy Mayor of Southwark said, “we are tackling knife crime from its roots, with support structures in place in primary schools”. Suggesting that plans are in place within all primary schools within Southwark.

However, Townsend Primary School, within Southwark, disagrees with this statement and has created their own lessons, without council help. They are teaching awareness surrounding knife crime to all their students and how to stay safe.

This is part of a movement within the area of Southwark, as many people are working together to help improve prevention of knife crime.

Townsend Primary school stated, “it is very important to tackle this issue, the local council haven’t done anything”.

Southwark council identifies that there is an issue surrounding increasing knife crime, but haven’t put these said, “support structures” in place.

Knife crime is an increasing worry. A mother with children at Townsend primary school said, “its really important that our children know how to avoid these dangers- the council need to step it up”.
