24th October, Kings College London

Kings College London is involved in the national non-profit organisation Sexpression UK.

Sexpression UK offer education in schools, around the topics of sex and sexual health, their aim is to allow individuals to make informed decisions about their bodies and health.

Georgi Dye, a third year student, has recently volunteered with the organisation. She explained that whilst she was in school she did not, “receive comprehensive sex education”. Because she did not receive sufficient information during her time in school, she feels that education around the subject is highly important, because, “Sex and relationships are a big part of our lives and it is not acceptable for young people to be ill informed”.

Sexpression UK offers education which has not always been part of the school curriculum, this includes the charity being LGBTQ+ inclusive, further allowing students and young people to understand what they are feeling, as there are very small amounts of formal education systems surrounding the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

Georgi went on to explain that it is not only the conventional lessons about sex and STIs that they teach, but they also teach subjects which are often bypassed, such as consent and what constitutes a healthy relationship. She said that “we also teach subjects tailored towards a modern audience, such as sex in the media”.
