Adejumoke runs away from Nigeria as husband want his daughter to undergo fgm

07 Nov Adejumoke runs away from Nigeria as husband want his daughter to undergo fgm

Fear: Adejumoke in a blurred picture for safety reasons.

Mrs Adegumoke, 37, says that she will never come back to Nigeria after her husband was planning the fgm of their daughter, 8. The woman had to escape last Tuesday from Lagos before this could happen. She now lives in a council house in Brixton and is seeking asylum in the UK.

Mrs Adegumoke heard her husband talking on the phone and agreeing to the time and place for the fgm to happen. She knew that he was not going to let this go, and decided to run away. “I was scared to do this. I called my friend and asked her for advice and she told me to come to London.”

The woman spent all of her savings to book the flight for her and her daughter. “I spent £900 for the tickets, I was desperate,” she added. Mrs Adejumoke packed the bags on Tuesday morning when her husband was out for work. She called a taxi, and with her daughter, they reached the International Terminal Ikeja airport in Lagos.

She describes her husband as very imposing and aggressive. He thinks that the fgm is an important process that young girls must undergo. It is also something that she believes to be “pushed” by family members. She is afraid that her husband tries to reach them. “I can’t let this happen, my daughter’s life is in danger.”

The woman feels safer in London but is still waiting for asylum approval. She has a care worker assigned for her and her daughter, which is helping them to go through the “trauma”.
