13 May Work book

Week 1- 4

Across weeks one to four there were a series of things that that introduced us to this module. In the first few weeks we learnt about how different voices are used across many platforms and understood how an audience is able to identify with certain news or radio organisations. From this it is easy to gage how different voices are used to promote and convey a particular message. We then began with voice coaching which allowed us to gain knowledge on how we as individuals were using our voices and encouraged us to identify if any changes that needed to be made, meeting in groups of two or three allowed Vanessa to go through each of our voices individually and give it the required attention so we were able to see exactly what it was that needed to either be improved or changed.

Before our small group voice sessions with Vanessa we were given the task of writing a short report and then recording it with our phones to see how we sounded. This task was especially helpful as it allowed us to hear ourselves, something we do not actually get to do, so we can see what possible improvements were needed. My short report read ‘2019 has been dubbed the deadliest year in a decade for London as knife crime has rapidly increased. The latest knife crime victims family have now said they plan to leave the UK because London is too dangerous. The mayor of London Sadiq Khan has come under in creasing pressure to take action and old debaits about police stop and search powers have been revived’.

During my individual assessment Vanessa identified that because of the way I am seated which is usually slowching or sitting incorrectly. I was given a list of things to work on including my articulation, improving muscle quality in my lungs and face. Also I was made aware that I needed to relax my body in order for the sound to pass through properly. Vanessa gave very useful tips in these sessions to help improve that such as stretching beforehand if I was to be broadcasting on that day including stretching my mouth muscles. Also practicing on my presenting technique so possibly watching presenters that I enjoy their sound and trying to emulate that could help increase a clearer audio in my voice.

We began researching on competitions and seeing what we either enjoyed or liked the sound of to help us throughout the process and spoke about our competition ideas with Rebecca, we were given feedback on what we had chosen but as it was the first few weeks there wasn’t any solid plans or competiions that I was keen on entering at the time as none stood out to me. The competition workshops were useful as we were able understand what others were doing and how we could apply it to the competition we finally would decide to go with.

WEEK 5- 8

During these weeks it saw us prepare for our live news and radio shows, we have been practicing doing different roles so it was easier for everyone to decide what role they wanted to take on as by this point we all know what suits us best and what we are strong in. For the live shows I was an on the day reporter so finding stories specifically on exciting local news was definetly tricky.

The editor wanted to keep it local so it was relatable to our audience so the stories I worked on that which fit the standard and put into inception were ‘ Camberwell new cemetry , yet another area of Southwark council, trees chainsawed for subsidized burial. They have been fighting for new trees and old graves’ ‘ Crystal palace have joined the race to sign Algerian midfielder Said Benrahma. Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, West Ham, Arsenal and Tottenham are all said to be keen on the play maker who has caught the eye playing for Brentford this season.’ ‘Students from the ‘gold anti racism’ group are steadfastly campaigning at Deptford town hall. They have been cut off from goldsmiths university campus wifi. Supporters of the anti racist campaign have been supplying them with food and water through windows’.

During one of the radio shows we had the task of creating a podcast which I was a presenter for. We discussed ideas that were relevant to us and even though we had minor technical difficulties we were able to get a 15 minute discussion from it. This helped to develop my idea for the completion when I came across the british podcast awards, the idea developed after deciding I wanted a continuation of the podcast and I was able to discuss topics that were relevant to myself and others around me. It allowed me to understand how what I was doing was fitting into the requirements and after discussing it with Rebecca more ideas were passed on, we had the idea to ask people of different backgrounds and cultures to express their opinions. This felt extremely relevant to me and I was super passionate about it as it was definetly something I had planned to do but after doing the podcast session it confirmed that this was something I would enjoy doing if I was continue.

WEEK 9-12

The last few weeks have seen us develop our ideas for our competition and seen us working towards the certain criterias. I was to get a 15 minute clip of a minimum of 6 of my podcast episodes to upload and showcase. But that meant all previous episodes needed structure. Myself and my co host developed the idea by sitting down and suggesting a routine we were comfortable with, we discussed planned upload days and live social media videos to increase viewers and listerners. Each week we wanted the topics to be relevant to ourselves. Preparation for the end of year show and how we will divide workload tasks and roles meant seeing what roles we all wanted and I have been assigned assistant editor so its important for me to understand that my job is to make the editors life that much easier by fulfilling tasks on time and to a specific standard, through all the live show training that we have done its easier for us to find exciting stories and create a show where everyone excels in their desired role.
