Tropico 6 Video Review

13 May Tropico 6 Video Review

My Interactive Journalism entry is for the Youth Journalism contest. It was agreed originally that I would do two 750-word written reviews and one two-minute audio review. However, the original output was changed to one 1000-word written review and a 4-5-minute video review.

The video review uses footage of the game Tropico 6 that I captured myself. I then wrote a script and recorded all the voiceover before editing the captured footage and the voiceover in Premiere Pro to produce a dynamic piece of video. I wanted to do a video review like this as I have watched a great many of them myself and they are extremely useful in helping me make a decision. I wanted the challenge of capturing the footage, voiceover and doing the editing to produce my own unique piece of work. The requirements of a video review are to be engaging and informative whilst maintaining brevity and not over-explaining. I believe my video review gets straight to the point, offers a quick and simple explanation of the game’s features and changes as well as providing little moments of humour to keep the viewer engaged.

My written review was of the game Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. This follows the more typical style of review writing. I chose this as the Assassin’s Creed series is something I know a lot about and it gave me the chance to research and analyse something I have, up-to now, enjoyed in a purely entertainment medium. The requirements of written reviews go beyond having an interest in video games. You must show attention to detail and the ability to edit your piece carefully. Description is vital and must be done succinctly, showing a real understanding of the subject matter. My review shows not only a knowledge of the game, but also the history of the series which is important to understand. I use my experience of the franchise to focus on the most important aspects whilst making sure that major plot details and spoilers are avoided.
