Saffron Cutts: D2 Data Journal/Workbook

15 May Saffron Cutts: D2 Data Journal/Workbook

week 1

This morning in class we continued to have a look at data and the ways that it is used in infographics. the subject of todays class was visualisation and the main points covered in the class were.

.Discussing how we use data to find stories and then visualise them.

.How we use text as data- looking at the state of union corpus.

In the afternoon in class with LJ we looked at the different ways to display data through graphs, for my assessment I will have to use a graph to further explain my narrative in a news story. we also had a go at making our own graphs, I made a pie chart that showed how much money I spend each month and what on.

week 2

Today in class we discussed the hw that was previously set, this was to take a look at the way infographics are used by journalists and how they use the raw data differently. we also began to discuss how we use Mode, median and averages to display data.

For our hw we’ve been asked to have a look at data and then make our own article on that data for next Monday.

week 3

In class this morning we discussed further our ideas for the stories we will be doing in for our infographic work. Originally was set on comparing the data sets for either 2 universities or two boroughs but i soon realised that creating an infographic for that would be difficult. i looked at some of the different statistics for Londons recycling and i can across a statistic for what percentage of each borough is green. from that i decided that i will merge the two ideas and look into finding the best borough in terms of overall environmental data. i will be creating a infographic of a map of London which is colour coded to show how environmentally friendly a borough is .

Week 4

Today in class in the morning our lesson focused on Data, facts, stats and data terminology. We discuss the best ways to check our data and then.  The different ways to display data and how they tell a story. We also went over mean median mode and averages stuff that we had learnt in school but need to re-In order to complete all data stories.

In the afternoon we had a guest speaker come to speak to us from the defence and security media advisory committee. Their job is to operate between the government departments and advise different media publications on national security.

Week 5

Today our lessons focus was on how we develop data stories we had a look at different types of data such as business data and looking at market data and how we find data stories. WeWe discussed how to find data who to speak to you about requesting data and guidelines of freedom of information. We will then set the task to find three new stories that we could then develop using data sets and then explain or angle based on the data.

We had our first session on how to use excel in the afternoon.

Week 6

Today in class we went over official sources of data such as the electoral commission and then look to international sources for data. In the afternoon class we had another lesson with a teacher who was teaching us how to use Excel explaining the best ways to manipulate data and produce graphs  based on data.

Week 7

today in class to begin with we started to discuss the homework that we had been set which was to find a dataset that we would want to use for our final infographics project I have not found my data yet but I have ideas to do something to do with either recycling or the environment. Which I then went on to discuss with my teacher who advised that I maybe try to look into the recycling data for the University. Later in the lesson we had a guest speaker come from fight hoax to discuss what fat hoax is and explained that we would be giving it a test drive for them in our classes in the coming weeks. In the afternoon we continued with our Excel lessons.

Week 8

Today in class we began using flight hoax for the first time. We were divided into groups and set the task to go onto different websites find new stories on Brexit  and then input them into the fight hoax site so that we could analyse themWe were. We presented our findings to the class and discussedHow trustworthy each article was. In the afternoon we had a visit from Ryerson university.

Week 9

This week we started off for lesson by discussing the recent news particularly what happened in New Zealand and we spoke about the best way to handle that using the editors code of practice and we discussed how different news applications had chosen to run with the story. We then continue to discuss how our infographic work was going I spoke about the fact that I was struggling to find  data but my teacher point me in the right direction of who to contact. In the afternoon lesson we began to practice using software called in design we learnt about how an infographic should look what is visually appealing about an info graphic and how to use typography in an infographic

Week 10

Today in class we continued to have a look at flighthoax. We analysed a news article about Theresa May as a class then divided back into our groups looking further into Brexit stories analysing them for trustworthiness we then went on to discuss our datasets further. In the afternoon we started to produce our infographics using the websites that LJ had posted on Moodle I decided to use a site called Piktar.

Week 11

mIn the morning class we went through our infographics story so far and how far we had got. We then went on to discuss the final analysis of the site fighthoax.

we had one-to-one is with LJ to discuss our info graphic I showed her the data that I had found for my infographic and we discussed the fact that I wasn’t sure about the right news angle to go with for my data.

Week 12

No lessons but continued work on my info graphic and data story.

Workbook

. Initially I wanted to do a new story to do with recycling or the environment

.I receive data on recycling in London from UK GOV

. I requested data from the University on how much recycling they produce

. University stated that they did not have any data on recycling but that they were enforcing recycling bins around the University

. Decided to make my new story about which area was the greenest place to live in London

. I plan to make an info graphic which was a map colour-coded to show where was the best place to live based on their recycling numbers

. Presented this I did LJ who reminded me that I needed to have a very clear news and go in my info graphic and data story

. Realised that this idea had no angle and was ridiculous as I would have to find multiple data statistics and just because a borough of recycles does not mean that they are a more environmentally friendly place to live.

. Went back to drawing board sadly

. When researching into a new data story I decided to have a look through some of my old new story side finish last term

. Came across a new story I did on sexual offences in the borough

. Looked into data sets for that on Met website

.Found that I could update my new story and data to form a info graphic and data story Once I had updated my new story with the relevant accurate information also this had a very clear angle

.Updated my news story

.Began using piktochart to make my info graphic decided on a very minimalistic theme as my subject was very serious but made sure to place in graphics were needed and individual typography
