Transcript

Intro –

A variety of different voices at different speeds and tempos overlapping reading the words ‘Social Media’ and ‘Mental Health.’

-Around 7-8 seconds

Then cuts to an abrupt silence

-Around 2 seconds

The music slowly creeps in over the introduction/ voice over. SAME MUSIC WILL PLAY OVER EVERY VOICE OVER.

VoiceOver – Have you ever compared yourself to the hundreds of people you follow online? Had fear of missing out when looking at a friend’s Facebook picture? Felt you’re not good enough or that you had to change certain things about yourself? Don’t worry you’re not alone.

According to a recent study by Echo UK, if you’re a young girl in the UK there’s a 25% chance you will experience depression by the age of 14. Rates of depression and anxiety among teenagers have increased by a staggering 70% in the last 25 years. Many studies suggest that one of the main causes of this crisis is the damaging effects of social media on young people.

It’s said that hours upon hours spent on social media can lead to potential attention deficit and addiction problems.

I spoke with self-proclaimed social media addict Maddie Newman who spends around 9hours a day glued to social media…

Maddie’s interview

  • 9 seconds talks about her addiction and how it makes her feels.
  • 2 minutes. How social media has had an effect on her depression and anxiety.

VoiceOver – It’s not just Maddie that feels this way and it’s definitely not just young girls affected. Around 1 in 7 young men ages between 16-24 experience depression and anxiety each year.

Deon Spelling at just the age of 21 has recently launched a series getting young men to open up and share their mental health struggles and journeys.

Deon’s interview (To be recorded / questions I will ask)

  • His own battle and experience
  • A little more on the series and why he decided to start?
  • What he hopes to achieve
  • Talk about how social media has helped him promote the series

VoiceOver – There is no denying the insane power that social media now holds,  With over two billion users around the globe it’s understandable why people are using it to promote at start business. Bringing people to levels of success they could only once dream of.

I caught up with Instagram sensation ‘The Tiny tank’ otherwise known as Onene Forbat. She sports a crazy 120k followers on Instagram and has managed to turn her social media profile into a profiting business.

Onene interview (To be recorded)

  • Why she started instagram
  • How she built a business

Voiceover – However, there is an underlying dark side to this. So many social influencers are now sharing their stories on their mental health battles, majority fulled by social media. Which is ironic as you would never guess from scrolling through their accounts.

Onene interview (To be recorded)

  • The pitfalls of the
  • The constant pressure and negative inputs from others

Voiceover –  Anxiety among teenagers has increased by a staggering 70% in the last 25 years. Many studies suggest that one of the main causes of this crisis is the damaging effects of social media on young people. How does this make you feel?

Onene interview (To be recorded)

  • Her response
  • What she tries to accomplish with her account (In terms of empowering young people and being as real as possible to her followers – letting them know when she shaving a bad day, or put on a few pound etc.)

Voiceover – I managed to get hold of Alethia Joshi who represents the Centre of Mental Health. They recently launched a report on the rise of social media, and its impact on young people’s mental health.

Aletha Joshi’s interview ( cut out bits on cyberbullying & what needs to be done / in a different part of the transcript).

Most of the time when you look around you, whether you’re on the commute to work, shopping or even out for dinner with friends. The majority of people are bent over staring vigorously into their mobile phones. Face it the majority of us are addicted, whether we admit it or not.

I attended a talk somewhere in east London… ran by a lady called Ellie Pitcher, she a campaign officer exclusively for mental health. That evening we examined the popular social media platforms which are supposed to be promoting sociability and encouraging friendships but are potentially failing in both. Is social media making us more antisocial?

-Have a clip of the hustle and bustle in the venue, also included her talking and question from the audience.

Ellie pitcher talk (To be recorded)

  • Are we using it to satisfy our own vanity?
  • Is this causing problems for our offline, real-life relationships with those around us?
  • What exactly is comparison syndrome?
  • The negative effects that can be caused by our love for social media.

Maddies interview ( Clip – Talking about fillers and cosmetic surgery)

VoiceOver – Remember Maddie from earlier on? That’s her talking about her obsession with filler and surgery. She decided to go ahead with her rhinoplasty surgery. I actually attended her consultation.

Hustle and bustle from the consolation

Interview with the surgeon

  • Why he uses Instagram to promote services?
  • Why does he collab with social media influencers?
  • Does he think a lot of his patients go through with the procedures due to social media?

Voiceover- It’s clear to see just how detrimental social media can be to your mental health. But what exactly can be done to help? Is there anything these big corporations such as Facebook and Instagram have in place to prevent us from feeling this way?

With Instagram being rated the worst social media platform when it comes to its impact on young people’s mental health what did they have to say?

Of course, I could not get in contact with them, however, a spokesperson has stated “The team’s entire focus is focusing on the wellbeing of the community, making the community a safer place, a place where people feel good, is a huge priority for Instagram,”

What do you think should be done?

Status of Mind report (Interview to be recorded)
