Plans for a 20 storey tower block in Peckham has caused outrage from locals, the plans also include the demolition of the Aylesham shopping centre replacing it with a new Morrison’s, other shops and housing.

However it is the 20 storey tower block, which has caused outrage and has led  locals to create a petition which currently has 4,938 backers, aiming for a target of 5,000.

As part of this petition, local people have been asked about the plan for this new tower block and have also been asked about the changes that are required for Peckham.

The people who started this petition, Peckham citizens, say that they have held meetings and other events to raise awareness of the plans and have produced a citizen’s charter on what should be done for the Aylesham centre site.

Speaking to JLDN, councillor Barrie Hargrove said “ The plans are currently being reviewed and that any development that comes forward will have affordable housing for local people.”

In recent years, the regeneration of Elephant and Castle and subsequent rise in house prices have created concern about regeneration, and the plans for this tower have raised  concern with it being deemed inconsistent with the image of Peckham and in poor taste.
