24 Nov Mother attempted murder of son 6 months sentenced to 4 years and 11 months in prison

Miss Madria Turay was sentenced to 4 years and 11 months in prison for the attempted murder of her 6 month old son in their home, on Thursday 22nd November.

Turay was arrested for smothering her son with a duvet, her stepmother, Aisha heard muffled cries and pushed Turay off of the child. Aisha said that “she put her full weight on him” and if “i hadn’t been here the baby would be dead”.

Turay said “i didn’t do it”, originally from Sierra Leone, Turay suffered with severe depression and Post Natal Depression (PND). Miss Turay’s refusal to admit her crime was the “real problem” according to the Judge who stated it was “Very very very worrying”.

Earlier that day, Turay had been arguing with Abdul Rahman Tarawalley, the two of them had a complicated history. Turay saw pictures of his new girlfriend and “couldn’t cope”.

The defence, Mr.Henderson, introduced new evidence, a psychiatric report later in the trial which was not conducted by previous defence, the judge considered this as a factor and said it seemed like a “spontaneous act”.

Upon sentencing the judge concluded that it was a combination of Turay’s depression and social circumstances that led to this act.
