Weekly Log – Nosheen

15 May Weekly Log – Nosheen

Week 1: Training –

Monday 29th January:

Course meeting: Discussed internship opportunities. Discussed the line-up for the upcoming semester.

Tuesday 30th January:

The class was split in half. Group A was production and group B was presenting. We were then taught in detail about the production desk and how to do each role. The intro to the module with training was very helpful as it allowed us to understand what we needed to do in our roles. I was numerous things including social media presenter and autocue. It was helpful because it was a chance for us to relearn some of the things we had forgotten. Allocated roles for the first show. Draft for our journalism project was also due.

Friday 2nd February:

Training in both presenting and production. Run through of what a Friday show morning will be like. It was very similar to Tuesday. We went over topics like improvising when you have errors.

Week 2: Training –

Monday 5th February:

Summary of submissions and editorial meeting. Discussed what we wanted to do for the fake news show as it was 30 mins instead of 15. Got into our VT groups and chose what we wanted to do. We assessed all the things that could go wrong during the live show and how to fix them. We also looked at videos on how to make the perfect VT. I liked Charlie Brooker’s guide to the perfect VT because it was really entertaining but informative.

Tuesday 6th February:

Run through of Inception and roles. I wrote a story on Fake News for my website. Started to look at possible interviewees for our VT.

Friday 9th February:

Talk through of Radio show for Friday 16th. We were deciding if we wanted to have bulletins or news about what stories had been found out to be fake news. We went over inception for the radio show.

Week 3: Fake news, floor manager, 30 mins show –

Monday 12th February:

Going over the roles for the live show. Our group did a fake news quiz VT where we asked students around the university what was fake and what was real. We then spoke to our guest booker on which guests they had booked for the show and what they had to offer.

My VT group had gone to the library on Wednesday 9th February to get Vox pops from students. We read them headlines and they had to tell us which one was true or false. The headlines that were too crazy to believe turned out to be true, like camels getting disqualified from a competition for having Botox. I also used this day to liaise with Alison form the LRC about the guests who were coming in for the live show. I also emailed the guests confirming their attendance and letting them know where to come at what time etc.

Tuesday 13th February:

Day of live show: We had some technical problems with our VT when adding the lower thirds so we decided to not use it and use the questions to ask the audience who were coming in. I was the floor manager which was a bit overwhelming at first because it was our first show and there were quite a lot of people. The guests we had on the show were:

  • Emily Brown, the Commissioning Editor for Cities and Young People from The Conversation
  • Adam Blackwell, Product Manager from ProQuest
  • Alastair Donald from The Academy of Ideas

Emily came 15 minutes late because she was lost and couldn’t find the building but I successfully brought her in while a VT was playing. We had some technical problems with Adam who was calling in using Skype. We managed to pinpoint the problem after communicating with him.

Overall, I think I did a good job as the floor manager because I handled the guests very well and communicated with everybody in a professional manner during the 30-minute show.

Our VT roles were

  • Nosheen –Interviews and filming
  • Lucy – Filming and editing
  • Ella – Interviews and PTC
  • Jason – GVs

Our VT group worked well together this week as everyone contributed and communicated well.

Friday 16th February:

Day of live show: I edited the audio from the video show on Tuesday and made a package with what the guests were saying about fake news. My group started to plan what we could do for our next audio and video piece.

Week 4: Olympics, floor manager, OTD reporter –

Monday 19th February:

We had an editorial meeting about where we were in terms of VT’s for this week’s show which was the Olympics. The class watched last week live shows and gave feedback. My group went to Canary Wharf ice rink to film our VT before class. Filming took about an hour. Ella and me ice skated while Lucy filmed. Ella had a go pro attached so we could use personal experience and Lucy filming from outside. We got some great shots and we got one of Ella falling which was great to use!

Tuesday 20th February:

Day of live show: I edited our VT and helped whoever needed help. Being the floor manager this week, was less confusing and overwhelming than the previous week because we didn’t have as many guests and I had settled into the role. I think I made a good floor manager overall.

Our VT roles were

  • Nosheen – Did activity and edited
  • Lucy – Filmed
  • Ella – Did activity and edited
  • Jason – N/A

This week our Vt group did have some hiccups. Jason, although was open to anything, didn’t make any suggestions. We were told that he was going to bring his Go pro for us to film with and he was fine with what we were filming. In the end, he did not turn up at all and we did not hear from him at all so were unsure what had happened.

Friday 23rd February:

Day of live show: I helped in the preparation for the radio show. Many people did not turn up, so we had quite a small team. I was an OTD reporter alongside Khaloa and some others. we produced a great audio piece about whether or not people even knew about the Olympics. We interviewed Maria who is a sports ambassador at LSBU. Overall the show was a success.

Week 5: trial show, radio presenter and OTD reporter –

Monday 26th February:

We had an editorial meeting for Local News stories we could do. We decided to do shows every other week. We had a few ideas:

  • The potential closing down of a mental health care home
  • Fining people for engine idling
  • Events for the elderly in Southwark

We decided to do ours on engine idling fines.

Tuesday 27th February:

We had no class today as the show for prospective students was cancelled due to snow.

Friday 2nd March:

Planned for the radio show

Week 6: local news radio presenter and OTD reporter –

Monday 5th March:

Our group had organised a meeting with councillor Ian Wingfield at Southwark borough council who helped implement Engine Idling fines within Southwark. We managed to get a 10-minute interview as Ian was very knowledgeable and passionate. It was great because we could choose what we wanted to add. After that we filmed GV’s in the area.

We had an editorial meeting at 2. We went through our VT’s Tuesday’s show and checked where everyone was at with their VTs. We discussed the following weeks topic (homelessness) and what ideas we had to incorporate that into a VT.

Tuesday 6th March:

Day of live show: I edited our VT piece alongside Lucy. We made sure that everything was clear, and it could be understood easily. We ended up with a great VT.  I also helped do intros in inception for VTs. Many people did not turn up this week and because of that, I was the Social media presenter. I think I presented well although I had never done it before. Some of the topics I presented were Angry people in newspapers which I personally thought was really funny and beer “for women” which was quite interesting.

Our VT roles were

  • Nosheen – Filmed and edited
  • Lucy – Interview and edited
  • Ella – Filmed and PTC
  • Jason – Made an appearance

Jason only made an appearance and made no suggestions or actual contributions to our VT.

Friday 9th March:

Day of live show:  I was a radio Presenter alongside Najma. I edited some audio about engine idling fines. I worked with the news editor and Najma to ensure that we both were comfortable with script and stories. The radio show was great, and I think we both spoke very well and discussed the topics. Lucas who was doing the bulletins also was very good.

Week 7: homelessness news editor –

Monday 12th March:

We had an editorial meeting about possible VTs we could do on homelessness. We had decided to do ours on Kensington homelessness. We chose to do Kensington because it has one of the highest rates of homeless people yet is one of the wealthiest boroughs. As the news editor I made sure everyone had a VT plan and those who were not there were assigned one.

Tuesday 13th March:

We started the planning and preparation for the VT & Audio Piece. My group looked into different ways to present our VT/Audio and have something finalised for the live shows.

Friday 16th March:

We started planning for the radio show.

Week 8: homlessness news editor –

Monday 19th March:

We had an editorial meeting where everyone said where they were in term of a finished VT and what was left to do. Overall everything was nearly finished and the content for the show was there.

Tuesday 20th March:

Day of live show:  Lucy and I edited the homelessness VT. I initially did the voiceover but because we had some audio problems we had to redo it. I was working on the script, so Lucy ended up redoing the voiceover. I was the news editor this week, so I wrote the script and made sure we had content. One group’s VT had some problems, so I sent people out to get a video about the big issue – a magazine made by homeless people in Southwark. I liaised with presenters to ensure that they were able to read the script well. The show went well and although we were short of content at the beginning of the day, we pulled through and the show was a success.

Our VT roles

  • Nosheen – Edited and voiceover
  • Lucy – Compiled content and edited

Cancelled show

Week 9:

Monday 16th April

We had an editorial meeting. It was decided that we would have one last show. After thinking about topics, we chose to do a free for all where we were able to choose what we did our VT on. My VT group were going to do a VT on the royal wedding. LJ later messaged us on slack saying we could change VT groups. I decided to do my VT with Eva, Jihan and Rhea. We did a VT on festivals.

Week 10

 Starting Monday, April 23rd

We filmed our VT this week. We made a list of essential items needed for a festival. We then bought a few items each depending on what we already owned. We discussed how we wanted to present and if we wanted a talkative video VS a more visually pleasing one. I did the PTC and used the products such as the glitter and lip balm. Eva and Jihan also used products and filmed. Rhea did the voiceover.

Week 11:

Monday, April 30th

Editorial meeting for the last ever show. We were able to choose our own VT groups so we all discussed what we had chosen and where we were in terms of finishing our VTS.

Tuesday 1st May

This was our last video show ever! I presented alongside Khaola which was great. We worked alongside the news editor to make sure we knew what packages we were presenting it and if we needed any rewording. Overall, I think I did a great job as a presenter. I helped Khaola out when she messed up.
