Production log: 12 week overview

15 May Production log: 12 week overview

Week 1 (29th Jan – 2nd Feb)

Monday

  • A course meeting was held, upcoming internships were discussed as well as what was going to be happening this semester. We were then allocated in to our respective productions teams in which we would be working in for the live shows.

Tuesday

  • We had a refresher session where we ran through a mock live show in various roles, refreshing ourselves on production and presenting roles after the long break. I was refreshed at how uncomfortable I am as a presenter; however, I was also reminded of the fast-paced nature of the newsroom and live shows, it helped me get back into the swing of things.

Friday

  • Friday was a refresher session with the audio shows, this was vital for me as I had very little experience in radio and the radio production roles. I picked up how to use the switch and soundboard, how to upload and just how to work the radio booth in order to put on a live show.

Week 2 (5th Feb – 9th Feb)

Monday

  • We were reminded of what our submissions entailed and what we could submit, we discussed different types of VT’s and got into our content groups, planning what we’ll submit for the live shows in the following weeks.

Tuesday

  • Tuesday was an intro to the editorial roles for the live video shows. We were given a rundown of inception and we were assigned a task to write a piece on a fake news, we were taught how to utilise the software when it came to uploading our written piece, utilising the WordPress function and etc.

Friday

  • Friday was an introduction to the roles for the live audio shows. We did a rundown of the radio program, how we use inception to create a radio show, putting scripts up for the radio show and

Week 3 (12th Feb – 16th Feb)

Monday

  • Monday’s lesson was taken by Michael. We had a meeting and were catching up on what V.T’s and audio pieces we had ready/had to finish in time for the fake news show on Tuesday.
  • We also got started on brainstorming V.T and audio piece ideas for the following week’s show, which would be based on the Winter Olympics.
  • My group decided we would do an explainer V.T for next weeks show, explaining North Korea’s relationship and history with the Olympics.

Tuesday

  • My assigned role was web editor, however, due to the social media editor being absent at the beginning, I then had to fill that position as this was of urgency. I went through stories with the presenter, trying to find engaging content such as quizzes to do with the live audience coming in and I practised with her over and over.
  • I also assisted the floor manager, helping shift everything that needed shifting, updating her on who was coming in and who wasn’t.
  • Due to this day being particularly busy, I couldn’t fulfil my role as web editor on the day, however, after the show aired I did upload it on to YouTube.

Friday

  • I helped gather last minute vox pops and re-edit some stuff before I had to leave halfway between the show due to an appointment that could not be rescheduled.

Week 4 (19th Feb – 23rd Feb)

Monday

  • ITV internship was discussed, how to apply, what should be in the application and etc.
  • We had a recap of the live show, this was to go over it and see what we did well and what we could do better.
  • We discussed that next week’s show would be based on local Southwark news, I decided I’d do an audio piece on the grants available for local Southwark people.
  • I wrote the script for my winter Olympics North Korean explainer V.T, after class I filmed and then edited it, ready for tomorrow.

Tuesday

  • The editorial meeting was held, discussed what our roles were and what roles needed to be filmed due to absences.
  • I came in early to export my V.T as I wasn’t sure I exported it in the right format initially, I wrote my in words in inception as soon as.
  • I helped social media presenter again, pulling stories and making sure she knew what she was going to say, making her comfortable.

Friday

  • It was Radio show day, there was a serious lack of content and I had yet to complete mine, so as efficiently as I could. I pulled the audio from my video and re-edited for the radio show.

Week 5 (26th Feb– 2nd March)

Monday/Tuesday/Friday

  • I was snowed in, unfortunately, trains were not working and I couldn’t get into university.

Week 6 (5th March – 9th March)

Monday

  • This was my first week as floor manager since I had no active role until on the day of the live show I began brainstorming immediately for the content for this week. I joined a different group as none of my group members were in and we decided we were going to cover the redevelopment plans of Elephant and Castle shopping centre. I helped plan, research, script and film this V.T.

Tuesday

  • Due to the assistant news editor being late and assumed absent, I took up the role as this needed to be filled.
  • As our news editor was busy with catching up with late V.T’s and by this point inception is my best friend, When our news editor had to attend to something else, I took this on. I aided in creating the running order and writing the script and in words.

Friday

  • I finished editing what I had for my Southwark Grants audio piece and uploaded straight away. I also helped those who needed it with last-minute vox pops and editing.

Week 7 (12th March – 16th March)

*No shows this week*

Monday

  • Meeting with Michael entailed us planning what we would be doing for next week’s show about homelessness. As my group and I had different timetables, I was not free at the same time as the others I decided to work on my own, because I’d be working on my own I decided to do an audio piece on the Brixton Soup Kitchen.

Tuesday

  • I planned and scripted my audio piece before contacting people I needed to interview and going out to do it on the same day.

Friday

  • On Friday I spent the day editing the piece and finishing it.

Week 8 (19th March – 23rd March)

Monday

  • Meeting with Michael was held to discuss what we had planned and were planning to do for this week’s video and audio shows.

Tuesday

  • I was bulletins presenter for today’s show, I spent the day liaising with social media, picking out appropriate stories for this week’s show considering the theme and making sure that social media and I covered similar but not the same stories. I was nervous and awful and do not wish to do it ever again. I learnt that bulletins presenter is far more than just reading off of autocue.
  • Prior to this, I helped organise the room as there was going to be a live audience again and there needed to be space made.

Friday

  • Lesson/show cancelled as journalism project students had their submission day.

Week 9 (16th April – 20th April)

Monday

  • A meeting between the class and LJ was held, she let us know that there would only be one final video and show left of the year.
  • I was assigned assistant news editor, together with the news editor and I decided it was a free for all, we would all just create content we really enjoyed.
  • I decided I would cover a spoken word event as a sort of highlights reel that was being held in Shoreditch, I filmed and edited alone.

Tuesday

  • As assistant news editor, I made sure that I was up to date with the progress of the V. T’s during the week, noting down any changes to the potential running order.

Friday

  • I began researching information about my V.T, who the organisers were of the event I’m covering, where the event was, what it was being held for. I also searched for contact numbers and emails to see if I was able to talk to anyone.

Week 10 (23rd April – 27th April)

Monday

  • *No class on Monday*

Tuesday

  • I had a meeting with Michael, discussing my C.V, how to edit it to increase my chances of landing a job. We also discussed my project ideas and my long-term aspirations.
  • I began planning what I would do for my V.T in terms of making calls for press passes, seeing if I could talk to people and whether I had the rights to the film.
  • I started to envision how I wanted the piece to look in terms of editing it.
  • As I was assistant news editor I was catching up with people across the week, making sure I was up to date with any changes made to the content, again.

Friday

  • I began writing a script for a voice over for my V.T that I had filmed the previous day at the event I was covering. I also began cutting some footage and playing around with some edits.

Week 11 (30th April – 4th May)

Monday

  • I was absent due to an appointment that could not be rescheduled.

Tuesday

  • It was the final live video show, I was delayed on a train for hours and was attempting to upload my V.T on the train with the minimal internet I had there, had to turn back and upload my V.T from home on to Dropbox, sending the news editor my in words and apologies.

Friday

  • I was assistant radio producer, assisting the producer with her roles. Whilst she was editing some of the unfinished audio pieces as there was a lack of people again, I created a running order, re-editing any of the scripts and checking over it making sure it made sense.
  • It was my responsibility to make sure all was uploaded in the correct format on Dropbox, most of the content was not, so I personally re-uploaded them in the correct format as there was no time to ask them individually.
  • I also assisted the radio producer on the board during the show, lowering and increasing the mic volumes when necessary and clicking the appropriate sound bites.

Week 12 – May 7 – May 11

Tuesday

  • Tuesday I was not in class as it was scheduled for submissions.

Wednesday

  • There was a degree meeting, informing us of opportunities with the university’s communications team and volunteering opportunities for the final degree show.
