Jordan Platt role critique – News Editor

15 May Jordan Platt role critique – News Editor

For week 3 and 4 i was given the role of News Editor. I want to be marked on my performance that took place during the live show in week 3.

I went into the role knowing I didn’t want to produce a normal script simply relaying the news, but rather create more of a chat show atmosphere and produce a script that was casual and contained humour. I began the day by holding a small editorial meeting for my peers to update us all on where they were at with their VT’s, then tried to instill time limits for when work had to be finalised. Overall I believe the show went well. The script was edited by the presenters so it suited their personal speech patterns, but still managed to encapsulate the essence of a chat show setup.

Although, learning how to use inception was difficult, due to me not having used it previously to the extent I needed to in order to produce a 15 minute live show, so there was a few mistakes, such as incorrect cues, and missing text from the script when it was uploaded to the autocue. Luckily the time limits I instilled at the beginning of the news day allowed time for multiple trial runs before the 3pm live show, so the issues we came across were able to be rectified.

If I could alter anything, it would be to prep part of the script ahead of time, so the presenters had more time to practice their delivery, as the one hour window they were given just wasn’t enough, and that was a fault of my own.
