Jason Colmer Interactive Log Book

15 May Jason Colmer Interactive Log Book

Week 1

I was given the role of producer, I began to distribute short term goals and objectives for my team, as well as re-teaching myself the skills and learning my way around the Inception programme.

However, I called the doctor and was told I needed to pick up a prescription, after returning to class an hour later I was told my role had been delegated which was regrettable however I improvised and continued my role as producing assistant.

Week 2

Me and my VT team were put in a group together and began working on our live show that week. We brainstormed ideas, and decided to fill a segment of the ‘Fake News’ show with our VT. We came up with the idea of using 3 outrageous comical headlines, however 1 of them is true, and the other 2 fake. We decided we would interview people about which headline they thought was the true one, with hopefully quite a comical VT.

Week 3

Myself and my VT team met up to film interviews and for our VT in the up and coming Live show on Tuesday 13th Feb. We filmed wide shots, interviews with students, and a short introduction and conclusion, all filmed in the Perry Library. The Library was quiet, so offered a good chance of getting a good interview. The quietness also helped with audio. I filmed some wide shots and some cut away shots as well as helping with editing, despite not being particularly skilled at editing.

On Tuesday, due to an issue with editing a pre-exported video file, it was decided we would leave the VT without Lower Thirds and instead I put my time into creating the quiz for the live show. I compiled news stories (some real and some fake) and put them together using a quiz creator online. This quiz will be used in the Live Show with the live audience participating in the quiz. Myself and Lucy tried to re-import the video file, but it failed and I continued to complete the live show quiz.

On Friday, unfortunately we were missing a fair amount of people. Beginning with just 7 of us, people would turn up and few would leave, leaving us needing to fill gaps and re-assign roles to other members of the class. The producer has been tied up trying to arrange an interview all day, it is now 2:18pm, As assistant producer, I have created a running order, chased up packages, uploaded the packages and also created introduction for each piece using Inception. I also went into the radio booth and have set up the packages and running order so everything is good to go. The producer is still struggling with the interview as the interviewee has cancelled last minute, however the packages fill the show so it is not entirely necessary to get that interview. I have formatted the packages and double checked the artists name, intros, and timing of each package.

Week 4

So far I have done extremely well and handled my role well, I also took on other roles at the same time in order to fill gaps left by other students not turning up. In week 4, my producer did not turn up til late, therefore i took on the role of  producer, and organised a running order and wrote scripts. I also managed to find more content which was then used in the show.

The show went very well and went according to plan. This week, my group wanted to go ice skating and record a VT for the live show. I contributed to the arrangements of the ice skating and also planned with my group to use my camera and its attachments (GoPro) for the VT. On the morning of the filming, I unfortunately lost my bank card meaning I could not get the tube to Canary Wharf in time, this meant that I could not attend the filming of the VT, however I let my team know and contributed to the organisation of the piece and the build up. The show went according to plan and was overall a success.

Week 5

After another successful radio show with extremely limited resources (people don’t turn up), I spoke with my VT group and decided on a subject for our next show. Based on local news, the show required us to find a local news story and create some content based around that news story. This week, we decided to do about air pollution, and the new law in Southwark that is preventing drivers from leaving their engines running on idle whilst at a stand still or parked. Today we will meet and discuss any filming for that VT in preparation for next weeks show.

Week 6

My VT group filmed an amazing interview with Counsellor Ian Wingfield, we met outside the southwark council building and set up our camera and briefed the counsellor on our interview. We ended up with an amazing interview, and then went on to film an intro and Outro outside the building. we gathered cutaways and general view shots form outside and also inside the council building. This week my role was bulletins editor. I gathered local and national news stories, including the current Russian Spy story, and collected them on Inception. I then wrote out the scripts for the bulletins presenter and sat down with them and went through my choice of news story. Many people yet again did not turn up, leaving roles empty and requiring other members to take on those roles on top of their current ones. Originally in the morning, i was going to be bulletins editor and then actually present the bulletins myself, until the bulletins presenter turned up later on. I feel I did my job to a high standard and was able to accomplish my goals throughout the day making for a successful show.

Week 7

Planning a VT this week, there were some issues with my group. We weren’t working together efficiently and there was little to none communication. This was a huge problem as none of us lived near each other so communication was key. This meant we could not gel together as i would of liked. This weeks subject was homelessness and how to combat it.We had planned to speak to a local charity.

Week 8

Due to the final project deadline unfortunately communication was non-existent. There was no communication between our group. We still had no VT for the live show and i had been made on the day reporter. As part of this, I was assigned to help a group without a VT interview a Big Issue seller. Unfortunately, we could not find one anywhere and so we made our way back to the uni. we decided to collect Vox pops of students saying their contributions to homelessness. everyone in my group was too shy so i took it upon myself to get these Vox pops. (Students surprisingly don’t have that much free time apparently) Finally we had the Vox pops using a member of the groups phone to record, seeing as it was a brand new phone which had the best camera. With this content edited for the show, we still had space that needed to be filled. In first year, we went to a homeless charity called St Mungos and got some interviews, we decided we could reach out again and hopefully get a guest for the show. Messages were exchanged with the group however on the day it fell through. Unfortunately the phone line wasn’t working and we couldn’t get through. I continued my role as well as helping others with theirs, including the bulletins. I helped research news stories for the Bulletins throughout the morning and also wrote introductions for VT’s and news stories on Inception.

Week 9

The class on Tuesday was extremely short. We started on time with quite a few people missing, it was the first day back after easter. The next live show was in two weeks time, as we had supervisor meetings throughout the week. I spoke with Lj and decided that my groups lack of communication was hindering my ability to work efficiently, and asked to move. Subsequently i moved into a group with Jordan, Georgia, Hannah and lily.

Week 10

This was the week of our placement evaluation deadlines, my group met in the class on Tuesday to submit our work together. Not many people turned up. We also spoke about possible outcomes for our final VT and ideas we had. We decided to cover a recent story about Radar Radio coming off air. Lily has ties with the radio show as she works at Worldwide FM and so the interviews were arranged fairly easily.

Week 11

No communication in my team over the weekend. Monday morning i decided to call Hannah to find out about filming that day, she said they were going to Finsbury park to get the interview. I called Jordan and he told me only Three people could go because of the size of the venue and the requirements. We decided myself and Georgia would edit the footage the following Tuesday- the day of our final show.

Week 12

Communication was great this week. We all decided to meet up at Uni and go to Underbelly festival. A small festival on the South Bank featuring shows and comic acts. We decided as a group that we wanted to hand in together and o our final VT together as a team, despite all of us having other options to submit for Video and Audio. Lily was not present and decided to do her own VT, However myself, Jordan, Georgia, Hannah and Lucas were all present and all worked together to create a great VT. On Wednesday, Lj hosted our final meeting. It was great to see the 1st and 2nd years at the stage we were at last year, and as a reminder of how far we have come since then, LJ compiled a short Video on our time here over the last three years with photos sent in by other classmates. I truly believe I will miss everyone here at LSBU, when you look at other courses, the help and guidance our class has from its lecturers is unmatched and is greatly appreciated.
