Infographic Workbook

08 May Infographic Workbook

Some key points:

-No blocks of writing in the ingographic

– Must represent the story

-Should be clear

– Understand all of the statistics even if they may seem boring in order to be creative in the infographic

VERY IMPORTANT

Have to cite the sources on the infographic – has to be very clear!!! Hyperlink to the source on the infographic in case the reader wants to check the statistics or just wants to get more information!!!

News feature should not explain the infographic – one element of the feature should be explained by the infographic.

Before creating the infographic , create a wireframe . It will help you planning the infographic , and the infographic will be much better if devised .

Analysing the dataset

The feature article is about the fall in teenage pregnancies in England in the 21st century.

The dataset chosen comes from the Office For National Statistics , and provides data about underage pregnancies from the year 1998 to 2016.

I have chosen to talk about the 21st century , thus i will mostly be looking at the data between 2000-2016( as the dataset goes only up to 2016).

The strategy that has caused the drastic decrease in the number of teenage pregnancies was implemented in 1999 , thus i will also have a look at the numbers during that year .

The data also provides the numbers of unerage pregnancies for Wales , but i will only use the data for England .

The dataset gives the numbers in quarters of the year (March , June ,September , December ), in order to get a number of underage pregnancies in one year , i have to add all of the quarters of the year that i am looking at .

So ,

In 1999 there were 39247 teenage pregnancies

In 2000 there were 38700 ,

And in 2016 there were 17014.

Clearly there has been a massive decrease in the underage pregnancies .

Why?

Should email some experts and see what they have to say.

I am currently a first year Journalism student at the London South Bank University , and for my final piece I am writing about pregnancies within women aged Under 18 .
It would be great if I would get a professional view . Thank you for your understanding . Hope to hear from you soon.
Please see the question below.

According to the office for national statistics , in England , during the year 2000 the number of pregnant women aged Under 18 was “38682” , and in 2016 , the number has decreased to “17014” women . Why do you think the number decreases every year since 2000 , was there something Done , specifically to lower the number of teenage pregnancies ?
Do you think the pattern will follow , and within the next years the number of teenage pregnancies will continue to decrease?

Alison Hadley’s reply :

Alison Hadley the only one who replied . She said , “The big reduction in teenage pregnancies is associated with the implementation of a cross government 10 year teenage pregnancy strategy (TPS) which was introduced by the labour government in 1999”.

Not a huge reply , but still can work with it.

– Should do a research on the strategy , and read the articles that she has sent the links to.
