Editorial Log – Jordan Platt

15 May Editorial Log – Jordan Platt

Week 1 – Beginning 29th January ’18

On Monday 29th January there was a course meeting discussing previous work experience obtained by each of us and possible future internship placements. Tuesday 30th January entailed us relearning how to use the production desk, and our presenting skills. We did a run through live show afterwards in which I briefly took on the role of director. Friday 2nd February, we ran through a refresher course on how to produce a great radio show, from producing multiple bulletins and how to use the production desk within the radio studio.

Week 2 – Beginning 5th February ’18

On Monday 5th February we were assigned our VT groups. I was in a group with JIhan, Eva and Nooria. We went over the content we’d like to create, and our first VT was surrounding the topic of University’s library’s and their relationship with technology. I was also informed I’d be News Editor, a main role, for the live shoes during week 3 and 4. I held an editorial meeting where myself and the assistant news editor went through the ideas for new stories that everyone had. This taught me how to run a meeting smoothly.

Tuesday 6th February, we went through the editorial roles for the live show. We went through how to be the on-the-day reporter and how to use social media. Friday 9th February, we went through inception, how to produce scripts and use the software, this was especially helpful as I was due to use inception as News Editor the following Tuesday.

Myself and my group spent the rest of this week producing our VT for week 3.

Week 3 – Beginning 12th February ’18

Monday 12th February was used to complete and edit together our VT. It was just over two minutes long. We interviewed two librarians from the LSBU library, Stephen Bowman (bowmans4@lsbu.ac.uk) and Kathy Neville (nevillek@lsbu.ac.uk) regarding their use of technology and in this week’s VT I produced the script for the PTC and presented the piece and interviewed the experts.

On Tuesday 13th February, I was the News Editor, and alongside the assistant I produced the live show, mainly the script. I kept the script humorous and wanted to achieve a more chat show feel. I learnt how to use inception and allow for the two presenters to quickly edit any sections of the shows script that they didn’t feel as though suited their speaking patterns.

On Friday 16th February, I again had the News Editor role, so I worked alongside the radio producer to make sure the script used on Tuesday could be altered appropriately to suit a radio format. I also began working on the following week’s script for the live show, as I had spare time throughout the day due to a radio show taking up less time to produce than the live show on a Tuesday.

Week 4 – Beginning 19th February ’18

Monday 19th February, I held a quick editorial meeting based on the following days live show surrounding the ‘Winter Olympics’. This week it was my groups job to produce written content for journalism.london instead of a VT.

Tuesday 20th February, I held an editorial meeting at the beginning of class to learn where each VT group was at with their content. I requested that everyone finalised their VTs by 11pm so we could begin work on the script to allow for plenty of time for the presenters to practice their scripts, as the previous week taught me the importance of a run-through, as the script I produced didn’t go down as well as I planned as the presenters didn’t have enough time to learn it; where to place emphasis on words and how to land the jokes contained within the script. I also helped the social media team find relevant content and the production desk set up mics and adjust the lighting in the room.

Friday 23rd February, I again was the News Editor. I didn’t have to do much in terms of writing or producing for this show but I helped in reducing the script from Tuesday and made sure that I was available to help in any which way I could.

Week 5 – Beginning 26th February ’18

This week it was decided by our course director that the live shows would be changed to going live every two weeks.

Monday 26th February, we used as a preparation day for the following weeks show.

Tuesday 27th February, the show on this day was cancelled by LJ.

Friday 2nd March, this week I was the on-the-day news reporter for the live show, but unfortunately due to work obligations I could not attend this lecture.

Week 6 – Beginning 5th March ’18

On Monday 5th March it was a typical lecture that went over the week’s live show.

Tuesday 6th March, I was the on-the-day reporter during this live show, and I sat on the couch with the presenters to discuss the topic of the show that day and provide further insight. Apart from this I didn’t have a bigger role or further input. As the on-the-day news reporter I made sure I had booked our a camera and mic, and I had Damien in the newsroom teach me how to operate the camera – technology isn’t my strong suit, and this was a great learning experience.

Friday 18th March, I arrived to class under the impression that I would be the on-the-day reporter again, but due to the setup of the radio show I was unneeded. So I used my time to work on my project and make sure I was available to assist when needed.

Week 7 – Beginning 12th March ’18

Unfortunately due to personal issues regarding family I was unable to attend this week.

Week 8 – Beginning 19th March ’18

On Monday 19th March, as usual we went over the weeks live show that was coming up. My group decided to produce an overview video in regards to the homelessness topic, discussing the relevance of The Big Issue and how it helps produce jobs.

Tuesday 20th March, i didn’t have much work to produce/do as I was the Prod6 producer for radio that week. I used the time to write the script and do the voice over for my VT groups piece on homelessness that week, while the rest of my group filmed and edited the piece.

On Friday 23rd March, I took on the role of Prod6 producer which entailed me confirming the stories coming in and dealing with any issues, and importing all the audio files to the transmission system. During the actual show being live i was not in the producers booth as there were no call-ins or interviewees that needed my assistance.

Week 9 – Beginning 16th April ’18

Unfortunately due to personal issues regarding family I was unable to attend this week.

Week 10 – Beginning 23rd April ’18

Unfortunately due to personal issues regarding family I was unable to attend this week.

Week 11 – Beginning 30th April ’18

On Monday 30th April myself, Lily and Hannah went to WorldWide FM in Finsbury Park to film a VT discussing the closing of radar radio. I was involved via filming, writing parts of the script (the outtro) and being involved in aesthetics (what would the shot contain), so we could produce a cohesive, visually pleasing piece. The only issue here was unfortunate camera angles when filming our interviewees, but it was a learning experience.

On Tuesday 1st May, we had our final live show. I didn’t have a specific job role so began helping out where needed, such as readjusting the cameras in order to create nicer looking shots. I assisted with lighting also.

On Friday 4th May, I unfortunately arrived late due to a delayed train from Manchester to London, but once I’d arrived I made sure I was available to assist in the final radio show. The show went well apart from a missing audio piece.

Week 12 – Beginning 7th April ’18

This week was used to make sure my submissions for University were ready to go, there was a whole course meeting on Wednesday 9th May, that I unfortunately was unable to attend due to work commitments.
