11 May Critical Explication – 05/02/2018

During the second week back, we, the second-year students, were getting ready to produce our first live show of the semester. We started the day by going through everyone’s packages, recapping what stories people had reported on and making sure the VT’s were edited and finalised. The team also got a rough running order of the show, which in turn lead to my content team’s VT being cut, due to their not being enough time. This worked out quite well though because I was having issues exporting our final VT in the correct format. The editorial team also sorted through some other details, such as; filling in the main roles of people who weren’t in class, finalising what stories would be covered bulletins and social media, and finding stories for on the day reporters to cover. During this week’s show I took on the role of a sofa presenter, along with Saf.

This week, our content team was assigned to produce a VT package on esports, which talked about why NBA team owners were investing in esports. My role was to be the VT editor, Isla took on the role of Editor and did the main research for the story and booked out equipment. Olivia was the presenter and James was the camera man.

This week we were all busy on different days, so we had to work our schedules around this and the date we got the equipment. We didn’t manage to get out to film until Saturday (3rd of February), however we did manage to get everything done in one day, which meant I had all day on Sunday to edit. The process of editing went well, however, as said above, I had trouble exporting the final package in the correct format. I’d edited the package at home and forgot to copy the Journalism. London format onto a memory stick to use at home. Next time I edit I need to either remember to do this or edit in the news room.

On the day of the live show, the editorial team ensured all the scripts and packages were completed for a production meeting at 1:30pm, rehearsal at 2:00pm and live show at 3:00pm. The rehearsal gave me, Saf and the other presenters an opportunity to run through the scripts, making sure things sounded right, and the editorial team to ensure the camera angles were all correct and that everyone knew when our guest would enter and leave. Due to the rehearsal taking place with enough time, our live show went ahead without any problems.

When I saw I would be a presenter this week, I was nervous and when it came to do the live show I still felt the same. Although the show went well, I wouldn’t want to take on the role as a presenter again. However, editing our VT packages is something that I enjoyed and wouldn’t mind taking on that role again. This would give me the opportunity to ensure I can export the packages correctly and gain more experience with the editing software.
