14 Dec Suspected Luton terrorist jailed for attempts to join ISIS

Mubashir Jamil, 22, from Luton, has been jailed for engaging in conduct in preparation to commit acts of terrorism.

Jamil was arrested on 27th April 2017 due to him sending encrypted messages to an undercover officer online that incited acts of terrorism.

Jamil said, “If you or some brother you know can put an explosive belt on me and tell me how to press, as soon as possible for security reasons, I can do something in the UK even tomorrow after I find a good target.”

The defendant was found guilty by Judge Peter Rock QC at The Old Bailey on 23rd November 2017, and received a “hybrid-order” sentencing of six years with a five-year extended licensing period upon Jamil’s release.

Upon his sentencing, Judge Peter Rock QC said that Mubashir Jamil’s crime was only ‘in part’ down to his mental illness and that he is still a ‘dangerous’ offender.

A “hybrid-order” sentencing means Jamil will spend part of his imprisonment in a secure hospital receiving treatment for his schizoaffective disorder.

Jamil will be transferred to a secure prison facility upon stabling his mental health.
