Whacking in a Winter Wonderland

London’s annual Winter Wonderland, a magical fairground full of shows, food, games, traditional Christmas markets and a possible bruised arm or two.

Hyde Park Corner station is undoubtedly one of the busiest stations in London around the time of Winter Wonderland and the staff are under immense pressure to mediate the crowds as well as prevent and control misconduct of the passengers travelling to Winter Wonderland.

The Piccadilly Line has had 95 incidents. Between 2015 and 2016, 91 Tube drivers sought counselling for person under the train incidents. Finn Brennan from the Rail union said: “These figures demonstrate the pressure that tube staff, and especially drivers, work under as they do their best to cope with the demands placed upon them”. The pressure is increasing for Tfl staff as the misconduct of passengers has resulted in more staff working in and outside Hyde Park Corner station.

Winter Wonderland attracts over 2.5 million visitors a year. Located right in between the worlds busiest street, Oxford Street and the prestigious Park Lane. The area gets particularly busy around this time, especially the near by train stations, Hyde Park Corner, Marble Arch, Green Park and Knightsbridge. Since the opening of Winter Wonderland on the 17th of November the Piccadilly line has been packed from Uxbridge to Cockfosters.

With increasing visits from tourists, the elderly and large groups including children, the winter hot spot is not the friendliest at all hours for visitors. There has been reported pushing and shoving of young children and the elderly by other visitors in a rush to enter Winter Wonderland.

All the near by station have bright pink signs to direct visitors to the attraction in order to avoid any hassle. Visitors are advised to get off at Marble Arch and walk through Hyde Park in order to prevent footpath congestion. There are Tfl staff in and around Hyde Park station to direct visitors and control behavior during rush hour. However Tfl staff, Denise Okeze said “it’s impossible to control everything, the moment we spot misconduct we will take action”. According to Denise there have been numerous complaints and reports of passengers on the trains and in the station, Tfl are doing their best to mediate this by frequent announcements in the station in regards to conduct and consideration to other passengers. They also have staff along the Hyde Park entrance to mediate and assist visitors in and out of the station. Staff have advised large groups with children to visit any time before 6pm in order to avoid rush hour on the journey home. Ultimately Tfl are relying on the visitors to abide by their rules to extinguish any future issues.

On the official Winter Wonderland website  they have the best and quickest ways of transport to get to the destination. Alternatively TFL have live updates for all stations, including updates specifically for Winter Wonderland visitors for the best route coming and going from the destination.

Stylist Live exclusive with Isla Russel

Stylist Live is a 3 day event which consists of specialist talks regarding food and fashion. We had JLDN reporter Isla Russel live on the scene for the latest news.

I was the Assistant producer, my role consisted of creating a running order and keeping up with all the groups to make sure that all the packages were being uploaded on time and in the correct format so that everything was ready for the live broadcast. This included working on inception to make sure the scripts were correct and present and managing the timing for each package. Also being in the studio to do run throughs before the live broadcast to make sure everything was seamless and help Liam to perfect the timings for the music and Isla’s phone call. This was particularly challenging as it was a stressful role

By doing so I had a clear idea in which order to deliver the facts which helped Francisca get a better idea of what and where to film by suiting the topic i was reporting eg. by opening with the topic of gaming Francisca decided to shoot me playing a console.
