Production Log

15 May Production Log

WEEK  1

Monday 30 January 2017

During the first day of this first week, we started by renewing the concept of:

Vox Pops “Voices of the people”, in the specific we refreshed what they are and gave some tips while recording them:

-What people got to say?

-Who we are asking? We need to be as diverse as possible

-Balance (with experts)

Packages

-The usage of music

-The Atmosphere

This can be helpful when mixing the thoughts of people with the atmosphere.

The Equipment that we are using to voice record

We also went outside (for about 4 hours) to actually test the theory about vox pops, by asking people some questions on Valentine’s Day.

We were working in pairs, in the specific we wanted to ask what “they thought about Valentine’s Day, If they were celebrating it and What they thought was the real meaning of it”.

The aim was to get 6 people (3 males and 3 females). In order to produce a piece as diverse as possible.

Before returning to class, for 45 minutes I also had my radio studio training. It helped me to understand how to operate in the radio suite.

After doing it we went back to class and we discussed what we achieved while doing our tasks. What challenges we had to face and what could we do better next time.

One suggestion that we had while listening to our vox pops was the fact that getting names and email addresses helps to increase the audience. So it’s something to keep in mind while producing any type of content.

We also started to talk about the live shows that we will be doing during the following weeks, and the concepts of an “off-diary” story and a “diary” one.

At the end of this session, we also chose in which beat we wanted to stay in order to produce content for the live shows.

Tuesday 31 January 2017

During this session, we started by refreshing our knowledge of Adobe Audition in order to make a 1-minute podcast using the vox pops we collected during the previous session about Valentine’s Day.

After doing so and have a play with some notions we already got about Audition, we started editing our recorded piece of 1-minute.

But before being able to finish it, we also went into the radio studio to record our intro and outro.

At 1 was the deadline, and in order to respect it, we uploaded our piece on drop box using also the correct format that was given to us previously.

At around 2 pm we started the session dived in the different teams for the live shows: Editorial, Production, and Presenting.

For the first week of the live show I was in Editorial, in the specific I was going to be “Website Editor”

We also got an explanation of how many pieces we needed to produce for the live shows and in each beat.

At the end, we also had training on Inception, the program we would be using to create story and the running orders for the show.

From 3.20 we had an audio/mics training that will be helpful with the actual live shows, when being part of the Production Team.

Wednesday 1 February 2017

On today session we focused on audio packages, in the specific, first we listened to the ones we did in the previous session in order to learn from the mistakes we made:

  • Try not to date your piece
  • No long pauses for short broadcast
  • 1 min (music must be no more then 30 sec)

After doing that we listened to professional audio packages and we tried to see how they connected all the vox pops and experts that they wanted to put into their piece.

At the end, we also had a look at stories that could be used for a potential audio package.

-Homework for next week was to listen to a BBC Podcast and transcribe it.

WEEK 2

Monday 6 February 2017

In the first session of this week, we focused on videos.

In the specific, we had a little refresh on how to do vox pops with videos, and which techniques to use.

We also explained the concept of:

-PTCs

-Crossing the line

After doing that and watching several tutorials on the argument, we went outside to film and practice what we knew.

The task was to get 6 vox pops and our piece to camera for 3 pm.

In order to record our piece to camera, since the theme was Valentine’s Day, we decided to go to the shopping centre and to film close to cards and gifts related to Valentine’s Day.

In order to achieve that we also had to prepare a little script.

After getting the vox pops, we got back to class and tried to understand what was hard and what to do better next time.

We then explained the Roles/teams for next week live show.

And started to discuss what which role main duties were and where each beat could get stories idea from.

Tuesday 7 February 2017

We started this session by having a little refresh on adobe premiere in order to edit our 1 min video.

In order to create it, we used the vox pops and the piece to camera we recorded yesterday.

The main things to pay attention to were:

-Transitions

-Piece to camera

-Sound

-The proper way to export it using the right format

After doing it we had a little introduction and explanations on the roles for the live shows and a little more in-depth training on inception.

From 3:00- 4:10

We had the training on presenting, during which we were pretending to present the show, being in control of the autocue and presenting the social media.

Wednesday 8 February 2017

We explored more the video packages by looking at the ones we created yesterday and by looking at professional examples as well.

After doing that we analysed them and came up with some tips we could use.

  • Write your script reflecting the material you have
  • You can use materials that have been there for some times
  • Cutaways

From 12:00-1:00 we had the conference on the live show for next week, in order to get every beat ideas since the theme was Valentine’s day.

From 2 to 4 pm we also had an extra session on After Effects that will be useful while editing videos fro the live show in order to put the lower third in the right way. And if being the person in charge of the graphics will be essential to know how it works as well.

Production of VT/ Audio Package

Over the weekend in our beat we also had to produce a VT and an audio package for our first live show.

AUDIO PACKAGE

In regards to the audio we met at the radio station to record it.

Since the theme of the following week was “Valentine’s day”, we decided to do a “top 10 playlist” on the theme.

In order to produce it, we had first to pick the songs and then record the intro and outro.

On Monday we then edit it

VIDEO PACKAGE

In regards to the VT, we decided to do a list of last minute things to do on Valentine’s Day, that we decided to call “a day on the Southbank”.

In order to produce it, over the weekend we met and record the materials we would then be using, to put together the VT.

I was helping with the recording part and finding a background music as well.

WEEK 3

Monday 13 February 2017

We started this week with an editorial meeting, looking forward to our first live show on Tuesday.

During the meeting, we got updates by each team on what point were on the two packages they were supposed to produce: the audio and the video.

We spent all the morning editing our packages in order to deliver them in the afternoon.

After editing them we uploaded them on Soundcloud, Youtube, and Dropbox.

Only after doing that we went on Inception and started to write our story for the running order for tomorrow. And what we wanted the presenters to say when introducing the piece and closing it.

Also we created a post on Journalism London Website for each piece.

Since I was website editor for this show I was given the username and password to the website, in order to upload the post for each piece produce and also the post with the link of the full live show (for both video and audio)

Tuesday 14 February 2017

Today there is the live show for both the video and the audio.

Each one of us has a specific task for the live show. Mine is the website editor.

But before getting into our roles, we did a conference at 10:30 in order to know how long each package is and if everything is done for the live show.

After doing that I started my task, by publishing the posts that every team submitted as a draft on the website, for both the audio and the video package.

Our team needed to make sure that the posts were in the right house style, and only after doing that we could publish them in the right way with a feature image as well.

Each Post needed also to be put in the right channel and category as well. As well as using the right size for the feature pictures

At 2:45 the live show went live. Hopefully, everything went all right, next week we will talk about the mistakes we made and what we can do better next time.

3:30 was the time of the radio show. When it started we couldn’t hear the intro and before the end, it was cut off because we run out of time. So this is something to keep in mind for next time.

After both the shows were done, I had to upload a post for both of them on the website, with the link of YouTube or Sound Cloud to watch/listen to it again if anyone wants to and with a list of all the roles with each one’s name and the different pieces we covered during the programs.

WEEK 4

Monday 20 February 2017

NSS

Tuesday 21 February 2017

Voice Coaching

First session 10:30-1:00

  • We started this session by introducing ourselves by saying “our names, a truth and a lie”
  • We then read some scripts in front of the camera (scripts we never saw before) in group of 2-3 in order to have some feedbacks and give them to each others as well
  • We then read another script 2 times, to see if anything changes when we were more comfortable with it
  • At the end of this session we also read some “real scripts” not prepared once again about different topics. This to learn the best way to put stress and intonation to a script we might read

Second session 2:00-4:30

  • The second session was less formal
  • It consisted of games we did to improve the usage of our voices

The games were made:

  • To communicate and receive messages in a clear way
  • To make other people believe in what we say
  • To defend what other say (and to understand what they say)
  • To understand each other roles
  • To read silly stuff but with feelings

Wednesday 22 February 2017

We watched the live shows from last week both audio and video and gave some tips on how to do better.

Audio:

  • Music too loud
  • Quality if the sound need to be checked
  • Fade out
  • Mix (voice, beginning song louder, fade in, voice)
  • Tight as possible

Video:

  • Sound
  • When you do a list you need to bring something    of yourself into it
  • More details (what is about, why related to Valentine’s day, something that makes sense)
  • Not only walking, play a little bit with the camera
  • Speed it up/ slow it down

Bulletin

  • Pictures come a little bit too late
  • Photos close to the story as possible
  • Screenshots of Twitter talk over them

Production of VT/ Audio Package

Over the weekend in our beat we also had to produce a VT and an audio package for our live show.

AUDIO PACKAGE

In regards to the audio, since the previous theme was “Valentine’s Day”, we thought it would be a good idea to do a playlist on “breakups”.

In order to produce it, first at all I had to do a little bit of research in order to find the songs I wanted to include in the playlist.

After that I was able to go in radio studio to record the intro and the outro to the songs, which I have previously scripted.

Once I had all the materials I was able to start the editing process.

One thing I had to pay attention to, while editing, was the level of the songs and of my voice-overs.

Also I had to keep attention to the length of the piece as well, because it couldn’t be more than 3 minutes long.

VIDEO PACKAGE

For the video package we decided to cover the premiere of the “Salesman” that took place that Sunday in Leicester Square.

In order to find this event, I went to the PR Website and found it, and since the director decided to boycott the Oscars, as protest for the ban that Trump did, I though it would be something interesting and really close to us to cover.

So once I had the idea, I had to do some research on the movies and the director as well.

After doing that I prepared a script for the intro and the outro and the voice-overs as well.

We then went down to Leicester square. I was the one filming everything.

So once I had all the footage I edited the video, putting also the lower third.

15 March 2017

Radio show

Discussion of it

  • Music framing into the package
  • You don’t need the questions (not Q&A)
  • If you can’t hear what they are saying cut it out
  • Tell your audience why you did a phone interview
  • If you want to use something really good, but with bad sound say “ sorry about the sound”
  • More explaining
  • You just introduce the person, you don’t need to say “this week”
  • No silence at the beginning and end
  • Top tips for keeping fit (sound, cutting, vox pops)
  • Make the interview stop and think and get back to you
  • Find anything you want to find out not general questions
  • It’s the job of the presenter to introduce the argument

We then discuss what we are going to do next week for both video and audio, since we have guests.

So since the theme was “student life” we decided to do one piece on “housing for student” and another one on “things to do in London on a budget”. I was in the theme of the second VT.

Since this week we were producing 2 VTs, we were not doing any audio piece.

Production of VT

Over the weekend in our beat we also had to produce 2 VTs for our live show.
