NUS Presidential Election – Audio (Presenting)

15 May NUS Presidential Election – Audio (Presenting)

April 2017 saw the National Union of Students have their election for the next President and Executive Committee. JLDN spoke to Tom Harwood, a contender in the election, and spoke to students at London South Bank University to gather their opinions on the NUS.

Through working in the political sphere I knew quite a lot about the NUS and also knew one of the contenders who was running to be the next President. He had caused quite a lot of controversy by running, due to his backing of Brexit – with a student population who overwhelmingly voted remain – and his political allegiance to the Conservative Party. However, he was getting a lot of attention due to his populist-like campaign, claiming he was running to bring credibility to the NUS.

I decided this would be a good story for the weekly radio show. I managed to secure a down the line interview which I recorded on an app on my phone. I then stitched the interview together in Premiere using techniques and skills learned throughout my course about building an engaging bit of audio. This involved creating a innovative hook at the beginning to galvanize the listeners attention – this took the form of news headlines about the NUS.

When I had completed the package I was informed by my editor that this needed to be 2 minutes longer in order to fit the schedule. I had to think quick on my feet, and was able to then carry out Voxpops on the LSBU campus, asking students what they thought of the NUS.

The audio package can be listened below:
