Ambient Noise – Tube Announcement Voice

Camberwell is less than three miles from London’s centre in Charing Cross. But for over a century, this bustling neighbourhood in South London has been left behind by the capital’s rail network. With an ever-growing population, and a major hospital going unserved by the rail network, TfL may finally be preparing to give Camberwell the facilities that it deeply needs.

It was announced last week that TfL would propose a case for reopening Camberwell Station, and that politicians would be asked to consider the proposals by mid-June. This proposal will be the latest in a long line of attempts to reopen the station since it closed down due to the First World War, 101 years ago. I spoke to some local residents to find out how a new station could effect them.

Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman is continuing to support the pressure for the station’s reopening, even if some have wondered aloud why so little progress was made in the early 2010s, when she served as a senior member of government for eighteen years.

With its trendy coffee shops, local galleries and University of the Arts campus right on the doorstep, Camberwell’s status as a hub for creatives south of the river seems secure for some time to come. Florence Welch and Ian Iqbal Rashid both call the area home. With improved links to the rest of the city, more may join them. I’m James, for JLDN.
