Fake news in Sports – Video

Fake news

15 May Fake news in Sports – Video

The growth of fake news has been … the tabloids since Trump’s election. However, this is not a new phenomenon. Fake news have existed in journalism for years, even in sports news. In sports however, this means fake information about sex changes, league transforms and, of course, deaths.

I was really happy how this VT came out. I directed and edited this video and spend a lot of time trying out different things. Since the theme for the week was fake news, I thought that it would be fun to create a VT that had some news elements in it. Practicing the “newspaper effect” and making different editing choices like slightly moving pictures and sound effects (0:1o-0:20) was new and exciting to me. I wanted the issue be both serious and entertaining, and since the piece was for our Global Campus show, it fit perfectly. I wanted the piece to be both informative and interesting, rather than just factual and boring. I think Matt’s presenting, the scenery behind him and the mixture of video clips and pictures made it a strong looking piece.

Surely, there is some things I would do differently. For example, the music did not work as well as I thought it would. It was too edgy and made the audio levels hard to adjust. The framing of some of the shots was off, as well as the sequence in which Matt walks down the river was shaky. If I could re-edit the piece, it would turn out even better. It was a good practice piece and I’m proud of the progress I made when editing this VT. Overall, I feel like this VT is a balanced example of the group and fit the Global Campus show perfectly.
