Editorial roles

02 May Editorial roles

An opportunity of being ‘news editor’ was a role which has hugely enabled me to enhance my experience further in the news room environment. It required consistency in keeping up to date and being aware of levels of progress for each report towards the aim of meeting a ‘three day’ deadline. This is from when it is constructed to when it is finally produced editor; specifically, to foresee the value, order and time. For example, although the ‘world book day’ event was a report that lacked an expert voice, it was timely as it happen the day before, therefore, was chosen as a first news report rather than the make-up review on shadow hunters (a TV Series). A major skill which was learnt from being news editor is assessing ways stories can work alongside or complement each other (in scripts or visuals) which was important part of making the live show happen and run successfully and discovering my organisational ability.

Using Inception was a helpful way of bring all the stories together. Here I was able to rewrite the scripts of our journalists which would usually be sent to the auto que for the presenters to read, record times (length of VT) When taking control of the 7th show, the editor role involved inviting and accommodating the guests for the intoxicated alcohol and the music festival during our  where the responsibility depended on me to ensure to have them onset at the appropriate time (during one of the VT’s) so that it displays that there  is a sense of organisation to the audience and also to save time. Additionally, keeping them well informed of what to expect and confirming their consent to be filmed was essential in making them feel comfortable, it was a chance to practice the professionalism of journalism.Screenshot_20160510-091858

Furthermore, I pursued the role of being presenter for the 3rd live show which gave me the opportunity to practice reading off the auto que and to manage how to remain relaxed behind camera. During this experience, I learnt to keep progressing forward when a minor fault was made such as missing out words but to also add character and display some interaction with my co- presenter Sam Batty. Although this was quite a challenge with being subject to unfortunate technical difficulties, we made many attempts to ‘make-better’ the errors made in order to sustain our commitment to improve on our presentation skills. Finally, I was given the role as a reporter of the ‘live broadcast’ at the student and graduate Enterprise event which was done through a skype call. This role was a highlight of all three editorial roles as it involved being explorative, finding the right expert voices on time and finding the right portable position ; all within the instance of the live show. Moreover, it was fun and something we tried incorporate following our social media, for the first but last time which was part of the successful finish to ‘JLDN 8’ (final show).
